Recently, I noticed my kitchen floor was sinking, and I was not sure of the reason behind it. So, I researched online, why is my kitchen floor sinking? I found a few reasons, like soil settlement, water damage, and others. During the research, I also found the steps to fix the sinking floor, which I am adding below for your reference.
How Do You Fix a Sinking Kitchen Floor?
Here are the common reasons for the sinking kitchen floor and solutions to fix it.
Proper Drainage and Soil Grading
After it rains, make sure water doesn’t sit around your house. If water collects near the bottom of your home, it can mess with the soil and cause the ground to shift. That is when floors sink or walls crack. So it is best if the yard is sloped a little away from the house, so the water runs off.
Foundation Waterproofing
You can use waterproof stuff like a special coating or paint on the outside of your foundation. It stops water from getting in and making the soil weak. Dry soil means a stronger base for your home.
Use of Helical Piers
If your house is already sinking a bit, there are these big metal screws, called helical piers, that go deep into the ground to hold your house steady. Think of them like giving your home a pair of strong boots to stand on.
Monitoring Moisture Levels
If your house feels damp, or stuff warping, it might be too humid. A dehumidifier helps a lot. Keeping things dry inside stops wood from rotting and your house from shifting more.
These are the steps to fix a sinking floor. For this kind of work, I am planning to hire a professional to do the job.
