I hired a plumber to do the piping work for my new house. During the work, I asked him why do drain pipes need vents? He said the vents supply fresh air to each plumbing fixture in the house, which helps move water through the drainage pipes every time a toilet is flushed or a sink is drained. He also mentioned a few other points, which I have attached below.
Why is it Necessary for Drain Pipes to Have Vents?
My plumber told me that drain pipes are usually connected to a re-vent that runs up and across to a stack vent, or sometimes they are linked directly to the main stack.
Without vents, a vacuum effect can happen, which could cause the wastewater to empty the traps. When that happens, dangerous sewage gases might leak into the house.
The vents help keep some water in the trap while the rest drains away.
The vent lets air stay between the trap and the draining water, making sure everything flows properly and safely.
After getting the explanation, I got an idea about why drain pipes need vents. I hope this will help you.
