Cities are being listed based on area, literacy, population, development, whether it is a metropolitan or not and more. I have heard people asking the question what is tier 1 cities and on researching I came to know that cities are listed based on population density as well. It gives us information about how many people are living in an area and we can get an idea about how much pressure is being imposed on that area and its resources. Density means mass per unit. I learned about Tier 1 city meaning in a newspaper. Tier 1 cities are the cities that have a population of 1 lakh or more as per the 2001 census, as per the Reserve Bank of India's reports. Cities coming under Tier 1 are the most developed cities in our nation, and cities under Tier 4 need to be developed. Only eight cities are on the list of Tier 1 cities in India. It is quite shocking. There are about 4,000 cities in India, and only eight of them are developed cities. Let me repeat the list once again for you.
