    Installing a water tank is essential for storing water and using it in times of need. However, we did not know how to calculate tank capacity and buy the required tank. We are a joint family and have plenty of guests throughout the year, so we wanted to install a large tank. I, therefore, asked our plumber to help me with how to calculate water tank capacity in liters in feet. His calculation seemed very easy, and I was able to understand it very easily.     How to measure water tank capacity?

    To measure the capacity of the tank, you will need to do some simple calculations. Here’s how you can calculate the capacity in litres using this formula:

    • Measure the length, width, and height of your water tank in feet.
    • Convert the measurements to centimetres since the standard unit for volume is cubic centimetres (cm³), and 1 litre is equal to 1000 cm³.
    • Calculate the volume in cubic centimetres.
    • Convert the volume from cubic centimetres to litres by dividing by 1000.

    Volume (in cm³) 

    Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) Capacity (in litres) = Volume (in cm³) / 1000

    Suppose you have a rectangular water tank with the following dimensions: 

    • Length = 5 feet 
    • Width = 3 feet 
    • Height = 4 feet

    Convert the dimensions to centimetres: 

    • Length = 5 feet × 30.48 cm/foot = 152.4 cm 
    • Width = 3 feet × 30.48 cm/foot = 91.44 cm 
    • Height = 4 feet × 30.48 cm/foot = 121.92 cm

    Calculate the volume: 

    Volume = 152.4 cm × 91.44 cm × 121.92 cm = 1696840.4864 cm³

    Now for volume to litres: 

    Capacity = 1696840.4864 cm³ / 1000 = 1696.8404864 litres

    So, the capacity of the water tank is approximately 1696.84 litres.

    We need water for residential, commercial and industrial buildings, hotels, hostels, and for other purposes such as drinking, cooking, washing, etc. For buildings and apartments, you will find water tanks that help to restore water. And from these tanks, we are able to do our domestic work. At times, I have seen people in rural areas build their own cylindrical tanks made up of cement. While in urban areas, you will find cylindrical water tanks of some known brands such as Patton. I have also seen a solar water heater tank that is cylindrical in shape. Since we use tanks to store water we should also learn how to calculate water tank capacity in liters.

    How to calculate water tank capacity in litres?

    To learn how to calculate round water tank capacity in liters, we should take three dimensions into consideration. Those three dimensions are length, breadth, and height. Let length be L, Breadth be B, and Height be H.

    So, if we take:

    L = 8ft

    B = 6 ft

    D/H = 5 ft

    Then the volume of the tank will be

    8 x 6 x 5 = 240 ft³

    We all know that 1ft³ is equivalent to 28.31 liter

    Therefore, the total volume of tank in liters will be  240 x 28.31 = 6794.4 liter.

    So, a tank has the capacity to store around 6800 litres of water. This is the process for how to find water tank capacity in liters.

    The water tank calculation formula depends on the rectangular and cylindrical shape of the tank;

    • Rectangular water tank capacity calculation formula:

    Suppose the dimension of a rectangular tank are as follows;

    1. Length = 2m
    2. Breadth= 1m
    3. Height= 0.5m

    Volume= LxBxH

    = 2m × 1m × 0.5m

    = 1m3

    So the volume of the water tank is 1 cubic metre.

    Now, multiply the answer by 1000 to convert it into a litre as,

    = 1×1000

    = 1000 litres

    • Cylindrical water tank capacity calculation formula:

    The total volume of water tank which is cylindrical is calculated by multiplying the area( A ) of the round end by the height H.

    A= πR2

    where R is the radius which is equal to 1/2 of diameter or d/2,

    Therefore the volume of Cylinder shaped water tank = πR2 × H,

    Take,

    Diameter = 1.12m

    height = 1m,

    then R = 1.12/2 = 0.56m,

    The volume of the tank = πR2 × H

    = 3.14 × 0.56 × 0.56 × 1

    = 0.984m3,

    Multiply the answer by 1000 as 0.984×1000= 9840 litres,
