Here is the difference between central AC and split AC:

  1. Central AC cools the entire house at once, while Split AC cools only one room at a time.

  2. Central AC uses ducts to send air to every room. A split AC does not use ducts; it has an indoor and an outdoor unit connected by a pipe.

  3. Central AC is controlled by one thermostat, so all rooms stay at the same temperature. A split AC has separate controls for each unit, so you can set different temperatures in different rooms.

  4. Installing Central AC is harder and more expensive, especially if there are no ducts in the house. A split AC is easier and faster to install because it requires only a small wall opening.

  5. Central AC works best for large homes or buildings. Split AC is better for small homes, apartments, or selective cooling.

  6. Central AC gives the house a clean look because only the vents are visible. Split AC has visible indoor units on the wall.

  7. Central AC can be efficient for full-house cooling, but may waste energy if you cool unused rooms. A split AC saves energy when you run only a few units.

  8. Maintaining the Central AC is more complex due to the ducts. Split AC is easier to clean and maintain.

So, central AC is best for commercial spaces and large buildings, while split AC is best for home cooling and offers more flexibility. I hope you know the difference between split AC and central AC.

The summer season has begun, so I plan to buy an air conditioner for my house. I checked online to see the prices and types of ACs available. I came across mini-split ACs and ducted central ACs, but I was unsure about the difference between split AC and central AC. So, I called one of my friends who owns an AC shop and asked him about it. He explained the differences in cooling methods, refrigerant lines, and a few other aspects, which I have listed below.

What is the Difference Between Central AC and Split AC?

Here is the difference between central and split AC units apart from what Abhinav has mentioned.

Parameters

Split AC (Mini-split)

Central AC (Ducted AC)

Cooling Method

Cool one room.

Cools the entire house at once.

Thermostat

Each AC has its thermostat.

One thermostat for the entire house.

Air Consistency

You can set different temps in each room.

Same temp everywhere.

Energy Efficiency

Saves energy by only cooling rooms you use.

Uses more energy to cool the entire house.

My friend recommended a split AC for me because commercial spaces use central AC. I hope you understand the difference between mini split and central air conditioning unit.

Split ACs have separate indoor and outdoor units connected by refrigerant pipes, ideal for individual rooms. Central ACs cool entire buildings from a centralized system, distributing air through ducts. Split AC offers zone-specific cooling while central AC provides uniform cooling throughout the space.

Being confused between central air conditioner vs split air conditioner is natural when buying an AC. But I am glad I had my father’s and my elder brother’s guidance when I was in this confusion. The two ACs have many distinct differences. Please keep reading to know about them.

Split AC or Central AC Which is Better?

Before understanding this, you should understand what these ACs actually do.

Central AC

As the name implies, a central air conditioning unit (central AC) is a type of air conditioning unit that is specifically built for large rooms, offices, malls, etc. There is only one central cooling unit in a central air conditioning system. As a result, we cannot change the temperature in a single room.

Split AC

A multi-split air conditioner is appropriate for multiple rooms, whereas a single-split air conditioner is best for one. One benefit of these air conditioners is that each room can have autonomous control over its operation. Now let me tell you the differences between the two.

What is the Difference Between Split AC and Central AC?

PARAMETERS CENTRAL AC SPLIT AC
Components It is a centralized unit with a network of ducts It has two components – an Indoor & Outdoor unit
Air Circulation Supply ducts circulate air for all rooms Indoor unit blows air
Energy Efficiency It is dependent on the Ducts High energy-efficiency
Temperature Control By one centrally-located thermostat By specific zones or rooms
Installation Not easy to install – Requires Ductwork Easy to install
Maintenance Difficult to maintain & Expensive Not expensive when compared to central AC
Appearance Virtually Invisible Visible
Central AC vs Split AC cost High Low
Suitable for Cooling Entire House Cooling Single or multiple rooms
These are some key distinctions of central air conditioner vs split air conditioner. I hope they help you make a better decision, like they helped me. Get Your AC Installed or Repaired at the Best Rates via NoBroker AC Services. Read More: How Much Central AC Cost in India?
