Summary
Lacquer is a clear or coloured coating applied to wood furniture, floors, and objects to protect them and enhance their appearance by highlighting grain and adding lustre. It dries quickly, forms a hard protective layer against water, stains, acids, and alkalis, and one coat is usually sufficient. However, it yellows over time, can only be applied on new or previously lacquered surfaces, and emits harmful, highly flammable volatile organic compounds.
Lacquer coating is a clear or coloured protective finish used mostly on wooden furniture, cabinets, and decorative items. It improves their look while safeguarding the surface from moisture, stains, scratches, and regular wear. I came to know about lacquer coating while researching wood finishes for my furniture upgrades. Below, I have shared more about what is lacquer.

When is Lacquer Coating the Right Choice?

Lacquer is ideally suited for interior wood surfaces that require a premium-looking finish and speedy finishing. It is mostly used on:
  • Wooden furniture
  • Kitchen cabinets
  • Wardrobes
  • Wooden doors
  • Musical instruments
  • Decorative wooden pieces
As Lacquer dries significantly faster than many other finishes, it allows professionals to apply numerous thin coats in a single day and minimise project time. Aman has already shared the advantages and disadvantages of lacquer coating here. So, I am not sharing the same thing again. I am sharing the comparison I did with other wood finishes below.

Lacquer vs PU vs Varnish Wood Finish

Feature Lacquer Wooden Coating Polyurethane or PU Wooden Coating Varnish Wooden Coating
Drying time Extremely fast Moderate Slow
Finish Matte to high gloss Satin to gloss Usually glossy
Scratch resistance Good Excellent Good
Moisture resistance Average Excellent Very good
Best use Indoor furniture Floors and high-traffic areas Outdoor furniture
From my experience, I must say a lacquer finish can last several years with normal indoor use and proper care before needing refinishing. However, it completely depends on wear and exposure. Recently I visited one of my friends, Sushila. At her place, I was amazed by the beauty of a lacquered table. Hence, I started enquiring about what does a lacquered finish means. Sushila told me that a protective and ornamental layer that is coated to a variety of surfaces—mostly wood, but occasionally metal, glass, or other materials—is known as a lacquered finish.

Layers of lacquer, a transparent or coloured liquid that dries to provide a hard, glossy surface, are applied to obtain this finish.

What Does Clear Lacquer Do?

Clear lacquer offers a translucent layer of protection for metal, wood, and even some types of art. It improves the material underneath with a glossy surface and protects it from moisture, UV light, and physical damage. Clear lacquer is a versatile finish used in furniture, automotive, and decorative applications.

What Does a Lacquer Finish Look Like?

A lacquer finish gives a smooth, polished, mirror-like surface and usually looks shiny and reflecting. It can be clear or tinted offering a variety of visual options, from glossy to satin to matte.

I hope this helps!

How Many Coats of Lacquer Should I Apply to Wood?

I have invested in visually appealing wood for my home – floors and furniture. My brother told me that wood requires some sort of clear wood finish to get the best out of it. It gives lustre, highlights the grain, and brings out a richer hue. He told me to go for lacquer coating. I did not know about it so I asked him what is lacquer coating. Here’s what he answered:

Lacquer is a coating that is usually seen on furniture, wooden sculptures, and guitars. It can be resinous, glossy, or matte and can come in coloured or clear styles. The coloured varieties will offer your furniture desired hue, while the clear type will offer a slightly yellow look. It is mainly used to protect the surfaces of the furniture from sunlight, moisture, and bacteria and fungus that can form on wood when it gets wet.

Now you know what is lacquer used for.

Get NoBroker’s Experienced Painters Onboard to Apply Lacquer Finish to Your Wooden Furniture!

Advantages:
  • It is a very quick-drying wood finish.

  • It helps create a hard protective coating that makes the wood resistant to damage from elements, such as alkalis, acid, or water.

  • Just one coat of lacquer is enough to protect your furniture from damage caused by water as well as stains.

Disadvantages:
  • It gets a yellowish tinge over time.

  • You can apply lacquer only on previously lacquered wood or new wood surfaces. If it‘s applied on a previously polished or painted surface, then it might react with the old finish and damage the furniture.

  • Lacquers emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be a health hazard. It’s highly inflammable.
