I believe that knowing about energy conservation techniques is in a way contributing a little towards conserving the environment. Because through knowledge we have the power to change habits within and around us. This is why in order to advance energy efficiency in the building industry, the Ministry of Power, Government of India, launched the Energy Conservation Building Code 2017 (ECBC) in May 2007. ECBC is being implemented in the Indian States by the Ministry of Power, in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) (Govt. of India, Ministry of Power).

What is energy conservation building code?

With extensive participation from numerous other stakeholders, including working architects, consultants, educational institutions, and other governmental agencies, the ECBC was created in accordance with the BEE criteria. ECBC's goal is to establish minimum standards for energy-efficient building design, construction, and system installation without sacrificing occupant comfort.

New Construction

The Indian government created the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) for brand-new commercial structures on May 27, 2007. For commercial buildings with a load connected of 100kW or a contract demand of 120 KVA and above, ECBC establishes minimal energy criteria. While the EC Act of 2001 gives the Central Government authority, the state governments have the freedom to change the code to meet specific local or regional needs and to notify the Central Government. The code is currently in the final notification stage.

Existing Buildings

Applying the ECBC code allowed us to save up to 30% on electricity in existing buildings. For this, we could perform retrofitting in the current structure and make it nearly ECBC compliant.

The Energy Conservation Building Code provides design norms for

• Thermal performance standards for the building envelope, including those for the walls, roofs, and windows

• Performance criteria for the led lighting, including daylighting, lamps, and luminaries

• HVAC system, including air distribution systems' energy efficiency

• electrical apparatus

• Systems for pumping and heating water, including the specifications for solar hot water systems.
