When you travel to mountains or hills you will see a lot of houses with hip roofs and gable roofs. These roofs have downward slopes towards the wall. Now, you may get confused with hip roofs and gable roofs so I will give an overview of

what is a hip roof design.

Spruce up your house by hiring qualified interior designers at NoBroker!

What is hip roof framing?

A hip roof contains no vertical ends. It has slopes on all sides and the slope ends up looking like a peak. At times the adjacent sides come inward making the slopes look like a ridge. When the two adjacent sides come and meet each other from the external angle it is called ‘hip’. Since the hip roof has peaks it is also known as a

pyramid hip roof.

Hip roofs are complex to construct and they are costlier than constructing gable roofs. A good example of a hip roof would be ‘The Hogwarts’. If you watched the Harry Potter Series you will remember that Hogwarts is made up of a hip roof and the school of magic is as beautiful as a dream! Isn't it?

Types of Hip Roof:

There are different types of hip roofs you will come across. I will share the list of different types of hip roofs:

  • PAVILION ROOF- A square structured roof with joints forming one peak.

  • MANSARD ROOF- A roof with two sloping angles and the lower angle is deeper than the upper angle.

  • TENTED ROOF- A roof with many sides along with steeply pitched slopes that form a peak.

  • DUTCH GABLE ROOF- A hip roof with a small section forming a gable on the upper portion of the roof.

  • HALF-HIP ROOF – A hip roof on a gable roof that slopes toward a ridge.

Since I have talked about the gable roof let me share the definition of a gable roof with you. As per the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a gable roof is “the triangular portion of a wall between edges of intersecting roof pitches.”

I hope you understand the meaning of hip roof design now.
