Our house has a wooden staircase which looks quite old. As a renovation contractor, I planned to take up a DIY renovation project and hence looked up how to renovate staircase. The process was quite simple, and before getting started with the steps, I found it necessary to gather the equipment, such as putty knives, paintbrushes/ rollers, sandpaper, etc. I have mentioned the steps below.

How to Renovate Old Stairs?
Here are the steps that I came across to renovate the stairs.
Start by removing the previous finish or carpet.
Check if there is any damage on the wood. If there is, then you can use wood filler to repair the damage.
After that, use sandpaper to remove the old finishes completely and a smooth surface.
Use a damp cloth to remove all the dust and residue from the wood surface.
You can choose to either stain or paint the surface after that. I stained the wood and used a cloth along the wood grain.
After that, I left it to dry completely and then applied a clear varnish. This was done to increase the durability of the stairs.
Finally, you can clean the staircase of any dust or debris. This is how to renovate stairs on a budget.
