A few months ago, I planned to install a metal roof on my terrace. But I wasn\'t sure about the process of how to install metal roofing. So, I hired an expert to install the roof. During the installation, he explained the process to me step by step, including metal sheet cutting, using mastic tape, and stitching screws. He also emphasised the importance of wearing protective gloves and taking accurate measurements for the sheets. I have shared the detailed process he informed me of below for you.

How Do You Install a Metal Roof?

The renovation expert told me about the following process on how to attach metal roofing.

  • If you need to cut the metal sheets, do it on the ground with the sheets face down on padded supports. Use a circular saw for straight cuts and a jigsaw or reciprocating saw for smaller or curved cuts.

    • When laying the first few sheets, don’t fully secure them at first to ensure they’re aligned. Once they’re in place, fasten them completely. The first row should hang over the edge to let rainwater drain properly.

      • You should use mastic tape and stitching screws to seal the side laps, with screws every 600mm. For end laps, overlap sheets by 250mm and support with a purlin. Seal gaps at the eaves and ridge to keep the roof waterproof.

        • Roofing can be dangerous, so you should wear protective gloves, clothing, a hard hat, and clean soft-soled shoes for better grip and to avoid damaging the sheets.

          • Purlins support the metal sheets and transfer the load to the building\'s frame. You can attach them to rafters with cleats and bolts. Make sure all purlin joints are supported by a rafter.
