We had old hardwood flooring in our parents’ house that had seen better days. Almost six months ago, when I visited there, I found it to be unattractive. Later, I hired the renovation team from NoBroker to do the job. Their head told us that rather than tearing out the hardwood, he would lay laminate flooring over it. I observed the process they followed and hence, shared the detailed steps on how to install laminate flooring over hardwood below.
How to Install Laminate Flooring Over Existing Hardwood?
Firstly, clean the hardwood floor.
Fix any squeaks and secure any loose boards with nails.
Give the floor a good sweep.
Remove the trims and baseboards around the perimeter.
If the padding in your laminate isn't already attached, lay underlayment over the hardwood.
Overlap seams and secure with tape.
To keep the first row's expansion space from the wall at 1/4 inch, measure and cut the floor.
Place spacers in the first row between the wall and the laminate.
Join the planks end to end.
Stagger the joints between rows.
Snug the planks together with a mallet and tapping block.
Using a jigsaw, trim planks as necessary at the ends and corners.
Cut the final row to the fitting size.
Finally, install baseboards and trims back in place to fill in the expansion gap.
These are the steps they followed to install laminate flooring over our existing hardwood floor.
