Knowing how to find north direction in room or in any place is very important. I say so because I have faced situations where I have been lost and in dire need of finding the north direction or I’ve been arranging furniture in a room and been confused about which is the north direction. I am sure you have faced such situations too. But not anymore. I am going to tell you some simple ways through which you can find the north direction with or without a compass. How to find north direction in room? A house is based on a map or the directions of a compass. The compass is like a cross which represents north at the top direction as N. East, west, north, south are the four cardinal directions which are represented by E, W, N, and S, respectively. Now, to find the north direction, you can draw an imaginary line between the hour hand and 12 o’clock on a wristwatch at 2 PM. This will create a line called the north-south line. The east and west direction where the sun rises and sets is the indicator of the north and south directions. Alternatively, you can stand with your right hand pointed towards the east where the sun rises. This way you will be faced in the north direction since your right arm is facing east. How to find north direction in room without a Compass? You can use a wristwatch to find directions without a compass.
  • A non-digital watch can be used as a compass. Place the watch on the surface level and point the hour hand in the direction of the sun.
  • The imaginary line shows the south direction which means that the north direction is at 180 degrees in the opposite direction.
  • Another way is by waiting for the sun to watch its movements and then determine which direction would be the north direction.

I moved into an apartment in Mumbai, and for almost a week I was unable to figure out “where is my north direction”. I am also not very good at it. Of course, using Google Maps would have solved the issue, but I wanted to restrict its use. I looked for some solutions and listed a few. Also, are you a Bear Grylls’s fan? I once watched him saying - which is north direction to me and also found the answer to it. My list of solutions will include several natural methods that do work. If you are lost in a forest like him, you can implement these methods. Which direction is north from my location? Knowing directions naturally can be useful in challenging situations when you are without your phone. So let me share a few methods to understand where the north is. Once you figure out a single direction, you will be able to figure out the rest.  I figured out from my location which direction is north using a stick. Here is how you can figure it-
  • Place a stick upward on the ground as soon as the sun rises
  • Stand in front of the stick and see in which direction is the shadow of the stick falling
  • Suppose the shadow is falling on the right of the stick, then your right side is the west direction
  • Once you figure out the west direction you will know that the opposite die is the west
  • So if the shadow is falling on the right side, the left side is the east direction, you are facing the north and your backside is the south direction.

I am poor at identifying directions and was confused about the north direction when I moved into my new apartment. I did not have a compass so I had to think of other ways on how to know north direction. Being a child, I was told how to figure out directions and I implemented them. I faced the west direction and figured out which direction was north. Let me share the simple way in detail now.

How to Detect the North Direction of My Location?

Several ways have been mentioned in the above comments on how to find north direction in room without compass. You can implement them but here is what I did. I faced the west and figured out that my back was facing the east. Now that I have two directions available, detecting directions become easier: If you face the west, your left hand side will be south, and your right hand side will be north.   • Look at what direction the sun is rising and face it.
  • Now, once you face the east direction, you will automatically know the opposite direction is west.
  • If you face the east, your left hand will be north and your right hand will be south.
