Summary
To drain water from an automatic washing machine, first switch off the power, unplug the machine, and close the water supply. Place towels and a bucket near the drain filter or emergency drain hose, then slowly open the filter or lower the hose below the drum to let water drain by gravity. If water remains inside, use a siphon or wet vacuum, then clean the filter and securely reattach all parts before restarting the machine.

To drain a washing machine, you must always turn off the power first. When an automatic washing machine stops in the middle of a cycle, the drain feature malfunctions, or you need to relocate or service it. I have shared step by step process on how to drain water from automatic washing machine below. But before that, let me share the list of items you must gather beforehand:

  • A bucket

  • Rags to protect the floor

  • A pair of gloves

  • Garden hose (optional)

  • Vacuum (optional)

How to Drain an Automatic Washing Machine?

  • At the mains, turn off the washing machine.

  • Close the water inlet valves and unplug it from the socket.

  • To catch spills, place rags around the washer's base.

  • Additionally, position your bucket close to the filter or drain pump location, which is the lowest entry point.

  • Find the access panel for the pump filter or the external drain pipe.

  • Open the filter panel or carefully remove the drain hose.

  • Place the filter outlet or hose end over your bucket.

  • Lower the hose below the drum level. It allows gravity to push water into the bucket.

  • If there is still water deep in the drum and it isn't draining, syphon it. To accomplish this, you can perform the following:

    • Fill a small hose with water.

    • Then, seal one end, and insert it into the drum.

    • Quickly place the other end down into a huge container.

  • Once all the water has been drained, dry the area and reattach everything in its proper location.

Hope this helps you.

If water is stuck within your automatic washing machine, you can drain it by using the emergency drain hose, cleaning the drain filter, or using the empty and Spin cycle (if your model enables it). I came to know about this from a plumber I hired last Saturday for the same issue. I have shared the detailed steps on how to drain water from automatic washing machine below.

How to Drain Automatic Washing Machine?

The previous answer by Monica Kumari already covered the basic draining methods, but I would like to give an alternative way that my plumber shared. Here are the steps:

  1. To drain water without starting a new wash cycle, select the Drain and Spin or Spin Only program.

  2. Unplug the machine for 5 to 10 minutes, then restart and execute the drain cycle to clear any temporary control panel issues.

  3. Disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe and flush it with clean water to remove any lint or detergent residue.

  4. If you are at ease, check the drain pump area for coins, buttons, or other small things that may be obstructing water flow.

He also told me that many drainage problems are caused by preventable mistakes such as opening the drain filter without a tray, neglecting routine filter cleaning, leaving small objects in pockets, or overloading the washing machine drum. The total cost he took for my washing machine’s drain blockage cleaning and repair was around Rs. 1,500. If you are unsure about the steps, it’s best to call the expert.
