Here is how to clean kitchen cabinets before painting:

  1. Empty the cabinets, remove doors, drawers and hardware and cover the countertop or floors with drop cloths.

  2. Then, vacuum or wipe dust from the surfaces, cracks and interiors.

  3. You can mix TSP, like 1 to 2 tablespoons of TSP for every 4 litres of warm water.

  4. You can then scrub all surfaces with a sponge or a brush, focusing on the greasy handles and lowers.

  5. If you wish to go with a natural option, mix equal parts of vinegar with water and apply this to tough spots. Let it be there for like 5 minutes and then scrub.

  6. Rinse well with clean damp cloths and change water often to get rid of all the cleaner residue, as it blocks paint adhesion.

  7. Use a tack cloth to wipe the cabinets. Otherwise, you can take a 50/50 denatured alcohol or water to remove dust and oil. Let it air dry completely, which may take up to a day.

These are all the steps you need to take to clean your kitchen cabinets before you paint them. I hope this information will help you.

A few months ago, I decided to repaint my kitchen cabinets because the paint was chipping in a lot of places and it had faded greatly over time. We hadn’t repainted the cabinets ever since we moved in 6 years ago, so it was about time. I knew that a thorough cleaning was important to achieve a smooth finish. I wanted to make sure the paint adhered properly. But I didn’t really know how to clean kitchen cabinets before painting, so I did some research. Here’s what I found.

How Do You Clean Kitchen Cabinets Before Painting?

  • I started by taking everything out of the cabinets, including the eateries, plates, and pans. This gave me a fresh start and made it possible for me to tidy and arrange things.

  • After emptying the cabinets, I scanned through the surfaces for dirt and grime.

  • I filled a bucket with a mixture of dish soap and warm water. I washed the cabinet doors and frames with a soft sponge, paying special attention to the areas where grease likes to collect around the handles.

  • I mixed baking soda and water to make a paste and put it straight on the stains for the most stubborn areas. I used an old toothbrush to gently scrape it after letting it sit for about ten minutes, and it worked really well.

  • I washed the cabinets with a wet cloth to get rid of any soap residue once I was satisfied with how clean they were.

  • I used white vinegar to clean all the surfaces to make sure everything was spotless. This procedure also naturally disinfected the space in addition to helping with removing any residual grease.

I was certain that the cabinets were prepared for painting after completely drying them with a fresh towel. I spent almost three hours cleaning all together, but it was definitely worth it. As this is time consuming, I suggest you better hire a professional cleaner. I hope you get an idea of how to clean kitchen cabinets before painting.
