Summary
After inheriting a property, the electricity bill name should be updated by transferring the meter’s ownership using valid inheritance documents like a death certificate or legal heir certificate, along with Aadhaar, PAN, and property papers. You can do this either online through the DISCOM portal or offline at the local electricity board office.

After inheriting a property, the legal heir should change the electricity bill name to ensure that utility records match the new ownership details. This process is important because an electricity bill is widely used as proof of address, occupancy, and ownership in banking, taxation, property transactions, and government documentation. You can do this online through your provider’s portal. Below, I have shared in detail how to change electricity bill name after property inheritance.

How can I Change Electricity Bill Name After Property Inheritance?

  1. The procedure usually starts after the death of the original owner and transfer of inheritance rights through a Will, succession certificate, legal heir certificate, or family settlement.

  2. The applicant must first collect essential documents, including the death certificate of the deceased owner, legal heir certificate or succession proof, Aadhaar card, PAN card, copy of the latest electricity bill, property ownership documents, and passport-size photographs.

  3. Some electricity boards may also ask for a no objection certificate from other legal heirs or an indemnity bond if multiple heirs are involved.

  4. The applicant can then apply either online through the electricity distribution company’s official portal or offline by visiting the local electricity office.

  5. In the online process, users must log in to the consumer services section, select the “Name Change” or “Ownership Transfer” option, fill in consumer details, upload scanned documents, and pay the prescribed processing fee.

  6. After submission, the electricity department verifies the documents and may conduct a field inspection before approving the request.

  7. Once approved, future electricity bills are issued in the heir’s name.

In many states, digital processing has reduced approval time to a few days if documents are complete and accurate. It is advisable to clear any pending electricity dues before applying because unpaid bills can delay approval. I hope this answers your query.
