Being a home interior expert, I was assigned the task of adding and designing a staircase headroom for one of my client’s houses. It is the free space between the slope line next to the tread and the floor of the above floor. 6 feet 8 inches minimum headroom is required. It is the vertical distance between one flight of stairs to the next floor slab or the flight immediately above it.

I would like to brief you all about,

• Pry the old stair treads off the staircase with care.

• To remove the old stair stringers, use a reciprocating saw.

• Use a circular saw to cut fresh notched stringers from 2x12s; use a handsaw to complete the cuts..

• Fix metal hanger plates to each stringer's top.

• Attach metal hangers to the bottom of each stringer using nails.

• Insert fresh stringers into the stairs opening.

• Secure the top of the stringers by driving nails through the header and hanger plates.

• Nailing through the wood hangers secures the bottom end of the stringers.

• Attach new risers with nails to stringers.

• Cut down the old treads to fit the new stringers.

• Secure the stair treads to the stringers with nails.

Though I have briefed you all about adding a staircase headroom. I would like to say that it is needed to hire a professional to complete this task. Also, you should take advice from a home interior expert, to have the correct height. When I was handling this project, my client expressed their demand for designing the staircase headroom. 

Hence, I thought that if the minimum height requirement for the stair headroom is 6 feet 8 inches, then what all designs can I incorporate. After a long thought I came up with the following staircase headroom designs;

You may have a dead space around the staircase headroom that can be used to easily add more storage.  You can add one or two lofts in that space. • Staircase headrooms with Lights:

Update the design of your staircase headroom with statement lighting. Recessed lighting will give even more flair to the design of those contemporary stairs if you want to take it a step further.
