How to calculate no. of steps in staircase?

Calculating the number of stairs to construct a house can be confusing and overwhelming at times. Well, there is a lot of mathematics involved to calculate the number of stairs. I will share one example of how to calculate no of steps in staircase. I will also mention the stair calculation formula so you can also do the maths on your own and calculate the number of stairs.

How to calculate stairs steps?

Let us consider that there is a floor level of 450mm. If we go by the regulations then we can consider a rise height between

If we consider the minimum riser height of 150 mm and divide the total change in level by 150 mm we will get=

450mm / 150mm = 3

 Therefore, we can understand that with a rise of 150mm we will have 3 risers/ steps.

Instead of three steps, we can also consider two. By dividing the change in level with the amount of steps we will get:

450mm / 2 = 225mm

225mm is over the maximum allowance of the riser. So, we should remember that we will rise 150mm with 3 steps.

As per the regulation to get answer for calculating stair steps we will need to use the formula:

Twice the Rise plus the Going (2R + G)between 550mm and 700mm.

So, going by the previous example mentioned we can select 220mm.

Going by this formula we will get:

2 x 150mm + 220mm = 520mm

Since outcome is between 550mm and 700mm

we can try 275mm

2 x 150mm + 275mm = 575mm

So we can understand going for 150mm risers and 275 mm risers.
