You can take 6 litres to be the requirement for painting your 12 by 12 room with a ceiling. How much paint is required for a 12x12 room including ceiling depends on your paintable room area and the paint coverage of the paint you are using. Let me tell you how I arrived at this number.
Paint Requirement for 12x12 Room with Ceiling
The average height of a wall is 10 sq. ft. So area of 1 wall, 12 x 10 = 120 sq. ft.
Area of 4 walls = 120 x 4 = 480 sq. ft.
The area of your ceiling would be 12 x 12 = 144 sq. ft.
Total area = 144 plus 480 = 624 sq. ft.
Now you need to account for the non paintable surfaces like doors and windows. 1 door is about 21 sq. ft. in area. And 1 window area is about 16 sq. ft. in general.
This gives you the non paintable area to be 21 + 16 sq. ft. = 37 sq. ft.
Subtracting the non paintable area from the total area = 624 - 37 = 587 sq. ft. (Paintable Area)
Now depending on the coverage of the paint you are using, you can use the following formula: Paint Needed (In Litres) = Paintable Area / Paint’s Coverage Area Per Litre.
Paint on average covers 100 sq. ft. per litre, so using that: 587/100 = 5.87 litres
You can adjust the numbers based on your rooms’ dimensions, number of windows and doors and paint coverage.
