Summary
For a 900 sq ft flat (likely a 2BHK), you will typically need approximately 35–45 litres of paint for two coats on walls, and around 8–10 litres for the ceiling. A general rule is to multiply the carpet area by 2.5–3 to estimate the total paintable wall surface area, then account for 120–150 sq ft coverage per litre.

For a 900 square foot flat (likely a 2BHK), you will need about 35 to 45 litres of paint for two coats. When I got my own 900 sq ft apartment painted last month, I assumed one or two buckets would be enough. It turns out that I miscalculated quite a bit. The amount of paint required depends on the size of the wall, the number of coats, and the surface condition. Below, I have shared the calculation on how much paint do I need for 900 square feet.

How Much Paint Do I Need to Paint 900 Sq Ft Flat?

It requires 30 to 35 litres of paint for the walls, 8 to 10 litres for the ceiling, and 15 to 20 litres of primer for painting a 900 sq ft space. Here is the calculation:

  • Calculate the exact paintable area.

A 900 square foot flat does not mean you will only paint 900 square feet. You should incorporate walls and ceilings. The paintable wall area is usually 2.5 to 3 times the carpet area.

So, for a 900-square-foot flat, it will be: 900 × 2.5 = approximately 2250 sq ft. If you include the ceilings, the paintable area may increase to 2600 to 2800 sq ft.

  • Check out the paint coverage.

Most paints cover approximately 120 to 150 square feet per litre per coat. Because at least two coats are required for a flawless finish, coverage decreases proportionately.

  • Finally, find the total paint required.

For my flat, here’s what worked:

  • Total paintable area: 2500 sq ft

  • 2 coats needed

  • Paint coverage: 130 sq ft per litre

So, the calculation will be 2500 ÷ 130 × 2 = approximately 38 to 40 litres of paint

If your walls are new or freshly plastered, you shouldn't leave out primer. It actually reduces potential paint consumption. So, for a 900 sq ft flat, you’ll need 40 litres of paint for two coats on average.
