Being a professional in flooring, and tiling work, my customers often asks me the question of are laminate flooring waterproof? Although manufacturers advertise laminates as "waterproof laminate," let me tell you that the truth is something different. High-density fiberboard (HDF) used to make traditional laminate flooring is not waterproof. But, newer waterproof models have a unique cover that makes them somewhat water-resistant but not totally impenetrable to moisture.
Is Laminate Flooring Ruined if it Gets Wet?
If you think "waterproof" means soaking laminate in water and leaving it that way for a week, then the answer is definitely no. Although not completely waterproof, several varieties of laminate flooring may withstand water and are therefore used in bathrooms as long as proper precautions are followed. Waterproof laminates are resistant to surface water but not flood-proof.
It's preferable to sweep and mop lightly using less water. Bathrooms should have adequate ventilation, and spills should be cleaned up right away.
