Kitchen Position as Per Vastu & Vastu Work Area

When it comes to creating a harmonious home, the kitchen position as per Vastu holds significant importance. According to Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian architectural science, the layout of your kitchen can greatly influence the energy dynamics within your living space.

By understanding and implementing Vastu principles, you can create a kitchen that promotes positivity, eliminates negative energies, and enhances the overall well-being of your home.

In this blog, we will delve into the fascinating world of kitchen Vastu, exploring tips for the ideal kitchen room direction as per Vastu and the perfect Vastu work area. So, let’s unlock the secrets and create a vibrant, energetically balanced kitchen that rejuvenates your senses.

Why is the Kitchen Position in Vastu Significant?

According to Vastu Shastra, the layout of a home can affect the way energies move around us. Everything, both living and nonliving, has an effect on the energy flow, which is why it is important to adhere to Vastu principles in order to ensure positivity and remove any bad energies.

In the home, the kitchen plays a crucial function. Energy comes from where the meal is prepared, not from the food itself. A kitchen that is improperly designed could result in an imbalance of energies that would directly affect the occupants of the home. Therefore, choosing the proper Vastu for the kitchen direction becomes crucial.

Kitchen Direction as per Vastu

kitchen location as per Vastu is stated and based on Padakalpana. For this, we divide the outer dimensions of the house into 10×10 = 100 or 9×9 = 81 parts. Each part is called a ‘Padam’ and has its own significant role (Fig.1).  We know that 3 elements of ‘Panjabhoothas’ viz. air, water and fire are required for food preparation. Hence, Vasthu states that the kitchen may be located in agnipadam (fire), parjanyapadam (water) or vayupadam (air)i.e., in SE, NE or NW corner of the house. However, there is a difficulty with this concept. In the case of small houses, this may not be practical. For e.g., let us say that the kitchen is located in one of the above-mentioned three padams. If the outer dimension of the house is only 30 ft, then the size of the kitchen would be 3×3 ft. which is impractical. Thus, this method of defining the location of the kitchen is more practical for large houses.

Position of Kitchen Based on Raasi Chakra

For small houses, Vasthu has provided another choice for defining the location of the kitchen. It is based on Raasi Chakra. Here, each side of the house is divided into four equal parts and each part is called ‘Raasi’ (Fig.2).

It states that the kitchen may be located in the medam/edavam raasi which means in the middle portion of the eastern wing. The eastern wing of the house (kizhakkini) is called annalayam (aalayam for preparing and having food).

Thus, in a more generalized way, Vasthu states that the kitchen may be located in the eastern or northern wing/part of the house with respect to Brahmasthanam.

Vaastu for Open Kitchen Layout

Several Indian families are beginning to embrace the idea of an open kitchen, especially those who have spent many years living overseas. Here are a few Vastu tips for open kitchen layouts to keep in mind before choosing the kitchen location according to Vastu:

  1. Due to the dominance of the fire element in both the south and east directions, the south-east is the perfect zone for an open kitchen.
  2. Avoid open kitchen designs in the northern zone since they limit prospects for job advancement, financial growth, and other opportunities.
  3. Another favourable zone for open kitchen designs is the west. An open kitchen in the west direction as per Vastu encourages gains and financial and physical well-being.

Vastu for Kitchen Windows & Ventilation

When planning your kitchen ventilation, exhaust fans and windows, it is important to know that the ideal directions as per Vastu are the east direction. This is because the sun rises in the east, so early morning sunlight helps in ventilating the kitchen of any remnant odours, and germs, as well as helps eliminates germs that normally thrive in the dark. Therefore, any air outlets or even modern chimneys like electronic ones must have their outlets directed towards the east direction.

Cooking Direction As Per Vastu

We have mentioned that kitchen items such as appliances and cooking gas should ideally be facing the direction where while cooking you face east or even the north-west kitchen as per Vastu is good too. You can also alternatively go in the west direction. Note that if the kitchen stove direction as per vastu is very close to the sink, be sure to include a vase made of bone china, which can serve as a remedy for Vastu dosh at home.

Position of Work Area (Second Kitchen)

Vasthu principle states that the kitchen may be located in the eastern or northern wing/part of the house with respect to Brahmasthanam. Nowadays, the first kitchen is mostly used as a pantry and the second kitchen becomes the working kitchen. In that case, the auspicious location for a working kitchen is the same as that of the first kitchen. However, there are some rules that need to be kept in mind while planning the working kitchen if the first kitchen is at the corners (NW/ NE/ SE).

If the first kitchen is located in the NE corner, then the work area can take positions either to the northern or eastern side of the first kitchen. The reason behind the positioning of both kitchen and work area in north/east wing is to be able to receive the light from north and east. Hence locating work area to the east or north of a NE corner kitchen in is not hindering this concept.

If the first kitchen is located in the NW corner, then the work area can take a position to the west side of the first kitchen and not to its north side. This is because of the fact that when we locate work area to the north side of a NW corner kitchen, light from the north side is obstructed from entering into the first kitchen.

Hence, positioning work area to the north of NW corner kitchen is not recommended. Similarly, if the first kitchen is located in the SE corner, then the work area can take a position to the south side of the first kitchen and not to its east side to ensure that both first kitchen and work area receive light from the east.
