When your ITR status shows “under processing”, it means the Central Processing Centre (CPC) has received and acknowledged your return, but has not yet completed its preliminary assessment under Section 143(1). 3. If CPC flags an issue, your ITR may be forwarded to the Assessing Officer or marked defective, which halts processing until clarification is provided.

Verify that your ITR was indeed e‑verified or ITR‑V signed and sent unverified returns stay in limbo. Check your portal under “View Filed Returns → Processing Status” to see if it's still “verified” or moved to “defective”.

If delayed unusually, file a grievance under “CPC‑ITR → Others/Processing” on the e‑Filing portal.
