Last week while switching on the AC, I realised that the AC is not cooling properly, and most probably the AC fan is not spinning. So, I called an AC technician and enquired: Why is my outdoor AC unit fan not spinning? He instructed me to stop using AC till the time being as the system may overheat due to the lack of airflow, which could harm the compressor.

Why is My AC Unit Fan Not Spinning?
The technician after inspecting the problem said that the AC unit fan was not spinning because of a burnt out motor because of overheating. I can share the steps that he followed to resolve this issue,
After shutting off the power source, the technician manually checked to see if the fan blades moved freely. He suspected a burnt-out motor because they were not moving freely.
The technician used a voltmeter to see if the motor was getting electricity.
After removing the damaged motor, he installed a new, unit-compatible motor.
Finally, he used a lubricant to guarantee smooth operation prior to reassembling. After securing the motor, he powered the unit back on to verify the fan was spinning properly.
Following the replacement fan motor, the air conditioner resumed working, bringing back enough cooling and circulation.

Recently, I have experienced that even though the system is operating, an outside AC unit fan not working. I hired an HVAC Technician to fix it and asked him why this was happening as well. He told me that the fan motor was burnt out, which was why it wasn't operating.
Furthermore, he mentioned that an outdoor air conditioning unit's fan can not be functioning for a number of reasons. I have listed them below for your reference.
Why is My AC Outside Unit Fan Not Running?
My AC technician told me that there could be the following circumstances due to which AC unit fan not spinning:
- Bad Or Burnt Out Fan Motor
According to him, if the fan motor has been damaged or burned out, the fan could fail to receive the power it needs to run.
- Broken Fan Blades
Broken fan blades will cause the fan to operate less effectively. Thus, it might compensate for it by running nonstop.
- Faulty Capacitor
The AC fan depends on the capacitor for power, therefore if it breaks down, the fan won't operate either.
- Clogged Air Filter
The air filter may get covered in dust, grime, and other material over time. It may prevent air from passing through the unit, allowing ice to accumulate and straining the fan to the point of failure.
- Broken Belt
Older types of AC condensers are belt-driven. These may break or come off as they become older.
To get the fan operating again, you might need to hire a qualified AC specialist to inspect and fix it. Moreover, my technician also said that a fan on AC unit not spinning can also result from problems such as issues in the compressor contactor, or a refrigerant leak.
To stop additional damage to your unit and make sure the air conditioning unit is running effectively, it is critical to take quick action. I hope you found this answer helpful.

Why is An Air Conditioner Fan Not Spinning Outside?
- Electrical Problems:
The motor might not be getting power because of a blown fuse, tripped circuit breaker, or damaged electrical connection. Verify the fuses and circuit breaker to make sure they are operating correctly.
- Motor Failure:
Examine whether the air conditioner fan motor not spinning. A broken or burned-out fan motor can be the cause of the failure. Over time, motors may wear out, in which case you will need to replace it.
- Capacitor Issues:
The motor's capacitor may be broken. The capacitor keeps the motor running and helps start it; if it fails, the motor will not spin. If the capacitor is malfunctioning, you might see it bulging or leaking.
- Problems with the Contactor:
If the contactor isn't working properly, the motor won't get electricity. Examine the contactor for indications of wear or damage.
- Wiring Issues:
Inspect for broken or loosened connections. Wires that are disconnected or corroded may stop the motor's electricity supply.
- Blocked Fan Blade:
Debris or other items can occasionally prevent the fan blade from moving. Remove any obstacles if that's the case.
- Thermostat Settings:
Check to see if the temperature and cooling mode on your thermostat are acceptable.
If you don't feel confident solving these problems on your own, it's advisable to get in touch with a qualified HVAC specialist to identify and fix the issue. When working with electrical components and the air conditioning unit, safety is paramount.
