I was dealing with a case of damaged bathroom flooring in our latest renovation work. The client asked why do bathroom floor tiles crack and I gave an elaborate explanation. I shall do the same for you here. To just put out the reasons in short first, poor installation, putting too much weight directly over the tiles and a cracked substrate cause cracking.

Why Bathroom Floor Tiles Undergo Cracking?

These are some reasons behind bathroom floor tiles cracking up:

  1. Wrong Installation: One of the main reasons is incorrect installation. This comprises insufficient adhesive coverage, improper grouting and insufficient substrate preparation.

  2. Too Much Weight: Another reason is the added weight and pressure on the tiles, which leads to the cracking of the flooring. This happens especially in regions with inadequate structural support. When heavy items are placed directly on the face of the tiles or when weight is concentrated on specific spots, it results in cracking.

  3. Cracked Substrate: If the underlying surface or substrate is damaged, uneven or cracked, it creates stress on the tiles above. So, check that the substrate is intact before tile installation.

So, these are all the reasons I am aware of. I hope this will help you understand why bathroom tiles crack.
