If the air filter is dirty, airflow decreases to the point that the evaporator coil shuts down. Dirty air filters and condenser coils cause the compressor to overheat because they put a strain on it. It automatically shuts down before any damage occurs. It is possible that it will need to be replaced if the compressor is constantly overheating. You should wash the condenser coils, replace air filters and clear all the blockages in the vent to let the airflow effectively.
