I celebrated Durga Puja last year when I visited my bua’s home in West Bengal. It was very fun as many food stalls were set up which sold a wide range of street foods ranging from samosas to golgappas. As per tradition, we wore new clothes every day. Even though it is a 10-day long festival, the last 5 days are considered to be the most significant ones. Now you know when will durga puja start in 2022. Besides Goddess Durga, deities of Karthik, Ganesha, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi are also worshipped.
According to Hindu mythology, this festival marks Goddess Durga’s visit to her natal house along with her kids.
Durga Puja is preceded by Mahalaya, which marks the beginning of the goddess’ journey to her house.
The actual puja begins from the sixth day or “Maha Sashthi” where devotees welcome Goddess Durga with gusto and pomp.
Durga puja is popular all over our country, but it is majorly celebrated in Bihar, Odisha, Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal with full zeal and enthusiasm. On this auspicious day, demon Mahishasur was killed by Goddess Durga. That’s why it signifies the victory of good over evil.
