Almost 4 months ago, I noticed the wood in my house started looking dull, so I thought it was time for a polish. I looked into different options and found two popular ones: Melamine vs PU polish. After researching both, I came to know PU polish brings out the natural wood grain and lasts longer, even though it is a bit more expensive. Melamine looked nice, especially with its glossy finish and color choices. I have shared more details below.

PU Polish vs Melamine Polish: What is the Difference?

Here are the differences between melamine and PU polish.

Features

Melamine Polish

PU Polish

Durability

Moderate, may chip or fade over time

Very durable, resists scratches, wear, and chemical damage

Water Resistance

Limited, not ideal for high-moisture areas

Excellent, protects well against water and humidity

Sunlight/UV Resistance

Poor, yellows, and deteriorate in sunlight

Strong, UV-resistant, and retains color on exterior surfaces

Finish and Look

Gloss and matte options; decent shine

Matte, satin, high gloss; premium, long-lasting appearance

Best for

Indoor furniture

Both interior and exterior furniture, high-traffic or moisture-prone areas

Application

Spray method; quick drying (20–30 mins)

Requires skilled application; longer drying/curing time

Cost

Affordable, commonly used in budget interiors

Expensive, considered a premium option

Lifespan

Average; may need refinishing over time

Long-lasting with minimal maintenance

I finally chose PU. It costs a bit more, but it's stronger and lasts longer. I hope you found this helpful.

Hello Akki, I am into interior designing and have been working around furniture settings as my main focus. So, I can help you understand melamine polish vs PU polish cost.

PU vs Melamine?

Here are the main differences which will help you differentiate between PU and melamine polish.

PU Melamine

It is a synthetic substance, where PU stands for Polyurethane.

Melamine is a kind of laminate made by compressing paper layers with melamine resin.

It is preferably used on wooden surfaces.

It is commonly used on MDF or particleboard surfaces.

PU finish enhances the grain and natural colour of the wood.

Melamine gives a smooth finish with a glossy surface.

It gives great resistance to chemicals, scratches and UV rays.

It offers resistance to moisture.

It is suitable for high traffic areas and furniture.

It is used in areas which are prone to humidity and spills.

This is all about the PU vs melamine polish. I hope this helps you.

How to apply melamine polish on wood?

Hello mate, I was obsessed with wooden furniture at the time. My whole furniture had an element of wood in some way or the other. It just stood out as classy for me. From the dining table to the sofas, everything looked pleasing because of the shiny wooden polish. I was really careful while selecting polishing material because that is where the difference would lie. So, here is a detailed melamine polish vs PU polish comparison to help you out.

What is melamine

Melamine is a wood polish which finds its usage on an international level including in our country. The compound is combined with formaldehyde to create melamine resin. This is a heat and fire-resistance synthetic polymer. The melamine polish has a thin resin, which forms a thin coating after its application on a wooden material.

What is PU Polish

On the other hand, PU polish is a polymer which develops a protective coating on top of the wooden surface. It helps in protecting the material from weathering, rust, and many more damage-causing factors.

Melamine vs PU polish

The differences between the two products are as follows.

Melamine PU Polish

It is standard in quality.

It is regarded as a high-quality polish.

Comparatively cheaper.

Costs more than melamine.

Has limited water resistance and turns yellow when facing the sun. With the passage of time, the furniture starts to chip off the edges.

Whereas the PU polish is hard, strong and resistant. Thus, it offers brilliant wear and protects the surface for a long period of time.

I hope my answer helps you to understand the difference between melamine and PU polish.
