Summary
The average monthly electricity bill with solar panels can be around Rs. 100 to Rs. 1,000 in many cases, but it varies from home to home. The bill depends on the solar system size, electricity usage, sunlight, net metering, and local billing rules. Fixed charges and taxes may still apply even when solar panels generate enough electricity to meet your home's needs.

When I first started using solar panels at home, I thought my electricity bill would become completely zero every month. But later, I understood that this depends on how much electricity my solar panels produce and how much electricity my home uses. The monthly bill can be very low, but it may not always be zero. For a home with solar panels, the average monthly electricity bill can be around Rs. 100 to Rs. 1,000 in many cases.

What Affects the Monthly Solar Electricity Bill?

  1. A larger solar system can produce more electricity. For example, a 5 kW system can usually produce more power than a 2 kW system.

  2. If I use more electricity for ACs, washing machines, refrigerators, water heaters and other appliances, my bill can be higher.

  3. Solar panels produce electricity mainly during the daytime. Their generation can change because of sunlight, rain, clouds and other weather conditions.

  4. With net metering, I can send extra solar electricity to the grid. The electricity exported and imported can then be adjusted according to the applicable billing rules.

  5. Even when my solar panels produce enough electricity for my home, the electricity bill may still include fixed charges, taxes or other applicable charges.

  6. For example, if my normal electricity bill was Rs. 3,000 per month, installing the right-sized solar system could significantly reduce the energy part of the bill. However, I may still need to pay some fixed or other charges.

So, there is no single average bill for every solar home. The final amount depends on the solar system size, electricity usage, local billing rules and solar generation. I hope you now know the average monthly electric bill with solar panels.
