Hey Friend,

I can help you with your query, what is self compacting concrete, as I am coming from a civil engineering background. Fresh concrete that flows under its own weight and does not require external vibration to undergo compaction is known as self-compacting concrete (SCC).

Just to reiterate, what is SCC concrete full form, I would like to say that it is self-compacting concrete. It is employed in construction when it is difficult to consolidate concrete with vibrators. Self-compacting concrete has the qualities of being able to fill and pass through objects as well as resisting segregation. In its fresh state, SCC has superior flow properties that enable self-compaction and material consolidation without segregation problems.

Self-compacting concrete is primarily designed using the following ingredients:
  • Cement

You can use regular Portland cement, either 43 or 53 grade.

  • Aggregates

The maximum aggregate size that can be used for SCC design is 20mm. The aggregate size utilised can range from 10 to 12 mm if the reinforcement used for the structure is crowded. The ideal option is well-graded aggregates, which can be round or cubical in shape. The fine aggregates used in SCC can either be manufactured aggregates (M-Sand) or natural aggregates with a consistent grade. In most cases, fine aggregates with particle size less than 0.125mm are used.

  • Water

The same standard of water is utilised for prestressed concrete and reinforced concrete construction.

  • Mineral Admixtures

Depending on the mix design and needed qualities, different minerals may be employed as admixtures. The various mineral admixtures that can be used and the unique properties they offer are listed below. The use of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) enhances the rheological characteristics of self-compacting concrete.

Fly ash:

The little fly ash particles contribute to the interior concrete matrix being filled better and with less porosity. The SCC constructions' strength and durability are increased as a result.

Silica Fumes:

Adding silica fumes to self-compacting concrete structures improves their mechanical qualities. Stone Particle: To increase the powder content of the mix, the stone powder is used in SCC.

  • Chemical Admixtures

In SCC mix design, new-generation superplasticizers are frequently used. Air entraining agents are utilised to increase the concrete structure's resilience to freeze and thaw. Retarders are used to limit the setting time.

What are the properties of SCC?

  • Filling Capability:

This attribute of concrete refers to its capacity to flow under its own weight without unintentional disturbance.

  • Passing Capability:

This characteristic refers to the concrete's capacity to keep its homogeneity.

  • Resistance to segregation:

This is the concrete's ability to resist segregation while it flows during the self-compaction process.

Advantages:
  • The concrete structure's permeability is reduced

  • SCC allows for creative freedom in concrete building design.

  • SCC construction moves more quickly.

  • The issues brought on by vibration will be resolved

  • Easy concrete placement results in significant cost savings.

Disadvantages:
  • There is no internationally recognised test standard for SCC mix design.

  • Construction costs are higher than those of traditional concrete construction.

  • More trial batches and lab tests will be necessary when using designed mixes.

  • More accuracy is required in the monitoring and measurement.

  • SCC material selection is more rigorous.

I would like to conclude here as I believe this suffices your query about what is self compacting concrete.
