A friend of mine works in NABARD. Out of curiosity, I asked him what is NABARD. He told me, the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have ideated a committee, programmes and schemes to increase agriculture and rural development in India. NABARD is one of the organisations.

NABARD or National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development was formed on 12 July 1982. It is a financial institution which focuses on credit-related issues linked with rural development. Initially, NABARD was set up with a capital of Rs.100 crore. In the first quarter of 2022, its paid-up capital stood at Rs.17,080.

What are NABARD bank functions?

The bank has credit and non credit-related functions. I will share a list below.

Non-credit related:
  • Credit planning and monitoring, coordination with various government agencies and institutions.

  • Assisting in policy formulation of GoI, RBI and State Governments on matters related to agricultural credit and rural development.

  • Institutional development and capacity building of Cooperatives and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).

  • Promotional and developmental initiatives in the areas of the farm

  • Supporting the financial efforts of Regional Rural Banks and Cooperative Banks.

  • Promoting rural innovations

  • Statutory inspection of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), State Cooperative Banks and District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs), a voluntary inspection of State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Banks (SCARDBs)

Credit-related:
  • Providing finance to Rural Financial Institutions for investment credit

  • Loans for warehousing infrastructure to State Governments, State/ Central government

  • Lending to Federation of cooperatives, Farmers’ Producers Organisations,(FPOs), Federations of Farmers’ Collectives, Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS)/ Cooperative Marketing Societies (CMS) or similar institutions, Corporates/ Companies, Individual entrepreneurs, etc.

I hope my explanation has solved your query about what is NABARD.
