The National Rural Employment Act (NREGA), officially renamed the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Act (MGNREGA), is an Indian labour law and social welfare policy aimed at ensuring the 'right to work' for Indian citizens. In September 2005, the MGNREGA Act was passed. The above Act was submitted by Minister of Rural Development Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and enacted by the Indian Parliament. Let’s see what is MGNREGA.
What is the full form of MGNREGA?
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was passed on August 25, 2005, and is also known as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). Adult members of every rural family willing to conduct public work-related untrained physical labour at the legal minimum pay are legally guaranteed one hundred days of employment every financial year under the MGNREGA. In collaboration with state governments, the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) of the Government of India is overseeing the full execution of this scheme.
Purpose of MGNREGA scheme:
Mahatma Gandhi later prefixed the NREGA, but the goal remained the same. Many unemployed workers in rural areas have found hope in the MNREGA scheme. Below are the objects that this scheme served:
1) It helps to provide rural employees with a minimum of 100 days of work per year in order to make them financially self-sufficient and enable them to live their lives with dignity.
2) It is created to provide a source of income for the area's economically disadvantaged residents.
3) One of the main objectives is to enhance the Panchayati Raj institutions.
Specifications of MGNREGA:
1) The wages must be paid weekly, with a daily minimum compensation of INR 65. If you do not find work within 15 days after submitting the application, you are entitled to a Daily Unemployment Allowance.
2) The programme is aimed mostly at women and operates in rural areas. They predict that registered women will make up at least one-third of the recipients.
3) Basic amenities such as first aid, drinking water, and shade should be available at the job site.
4) You must be employed within a 5-kilometre radius of the hamlet where you are residing at the date of submission or you must be paid 10% more to cover transportation costs.
