AMRUT aims to provide basic civic amenities such as water supply, sewerage, urban transportation, parks to improve the quality of life for the poor and disadvantaged especially.The scheme is in place to ensure that every household in the selected cities has access to a tap with an assured supply of water and a sewerage connection. It also ensures that there is an increase in the amenity value of cities by developing greenery and well-maintained open spaces like parks. Another focal point of the scheme is to reduce pollution by switching to public transport or constructing facilities for non-motorized transport.What are the thrust areas?The major focus through the AMRUT scheme lays on improving, Water Supply, Sewerage and septage management, storm water drainage to reduce flooding, Non-motorized urban transport, green spaces, or parks.What is the coverage of AMRUT Scheme?The AMRUT scheme covers 500 cities as of now. The categories of the cities selected are; cities and towns with a population of over 1 lakh with notified Municipalities as per Census 2011, including Cantonment Boards (Civilian areas), all capital cities/ towns of States/ UTs, all cities/ towns classified as Heritage Cities by MoHUA under the HRIDAY Scheme, 13 cities and towns on the stem of the main rivers with a population above 75,000 and less than 1 lakh, and 10 cities from hill states, islands and tourist destinations (not more than one from each State).
