What does HVAC mean?

The full form of HVAC is Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. This is a system, which is installed in residential and commercial buildings to improve air quality. As you may have guessed already, the above three terms are put to work to achieve good air quality. The system also aims at cooling and heating a space. Let me describe the workings of the HVAC system for you to understand things better.

How does an HVAC System Work?

A proper HVAC system consists of elements, such as the AC, furnace, ductwork, thermostat, air handler and several other components like an air purifier or a humidifier.

After the installation process is completed, you can control the temperature with the help of the thermostat. Once you give this command, the thermostat tells the other units in the system to change the temperature. The process of generating cool or warm air begins. 

The formed air will get distributed across the space through the assistance of ductwork or an air handler. In case the system is ductless, refrigerant lines will guide the air through the HVAC system.

Heaters are the suppliers of warm air in the building. Usually, the commercial buildings have a centralized heating system which requires a boiler, furnace, heat pump or heat water in a mechanical room. Heat pump extracts heat from environmental air, exhaust air, or from ground.

In an apartment or a building ventilation is an important factor. It is the process of changing and replacing air to remove moisture, odor, smoke, heat, dust, bacteria, etc. ventilation systems enable intentional delivery of air in the building premises. 

Air conditioning provides cooling or humidity control throughout the building or in the parts where air conditioning is enabled. The fresh air gets drawn into the system by a vent via air chamber. Then the mixture of air enters into the heat exchanger section where it is cooled down, and guided to the space creating positive air pressure. The heat from the air is removed via radiation, convection or conduction.

The major advantage of having an HVAC system in place is that the air is purified and all the germs, bacteria, dust, mold, allergens, etc. are removed.
