Summary
Enhanced due diligence (EDD) is a deeper level of verification applied to customers, clients, or transactions that carry a higher risk of money laundering, fraud, or corruption. It goes beyond standard checks by examining the source of funds and wealth, ownership structures, business relationships, and adverse media. It is commonly required for politically exposed persons, high-value transactions, and clients from high-risk jurisdictions, with continuous monitoring afterward.

Enhanced due diligence (EDD) is a more thorough verification process used when a customer, client, or transaction presents a greater risk of money laundering, fraud, or corruption. Unlike routine checks, it investigates the origin of funds and wealth, ownership structures, business ties, and negative media coverage. It typically applies to politically exposed persons, large-value transactions, and clients from high-risk jurisdictions, followed by ongoing monitoring.

What are the Steps to Conduct EDD?

  • Identify the Risk: Flag customers based on jurisdiction, occupation, transaction size, or status as a politically exposed person.

  • Collect Additional Documents: Obtain identity proofs, address proofs, incorporation papers, and recent financial statements beyond standard requirements.

  • Verify the Source of Funds: Confirm through bank statements, tax returns, or sale deeds where the money and overall wealth originate.

  • Map the Ownership: Identify the ultimate beneficial owners and directors behind companies, trusts, and other complex structures.

  • Screen Against Watchlists: Check sanctions lists, adverse media, and court records for links to crime or corruption.

  • Obtain Senior Approval: Senior management must approve onboarding or the continuation of the relationship.

  • Monitor Continuously: Review transactions, update customer records regularly, and report suspicious activity to the financial intelligence unit.

When is EDD Required for Customers?

It is required when a customer belongs to a high-risk country, runs a cash-intensive business, or makes unusually large or complex transactions without a clear economic purpose. Non-face-to-face relationships, correspondent banking, and private banking accounts also trigger it. Institutions must apply it as well when standard checks raise red flags or when a low-risk customer's behaviour changes suddenly. Failing to do so can invite regulatory penalties and reputational damage.

I hope you understood what is enhanced due diligence.
