In plumbing, a trap is a curved or U-shaped section of pipe that is designed to prevent the backflow of sewer gases into a building or structure. It is usually installed below sinks, bathtubs, showers, and other fixtures that have a drain. So the meaning of what is a trap in plumbing is simple. It is the U shaped portion of pipe that is crafted to trap liquid or gas to prevent unwanted flow. Let me elaborate a bit about it.

What is the purpose of a trap in plumbing?

A trap in a drainage system serves several purposes like-

Gas Seal:

The main function of a trap is to create a barrier between the plumbing system and the sewer or septic system. This water seal prevents sewer gases, which contain unpleasant and potentially harmful odours, from entering the building. It helps maintain a healthy and odour-free environment.

Hygiene and Health:

The trap, by preventing the entry of sewer gases, plays an important role in maintaining proper hygiene and health standards within a building. Sewer gases can contain hazardous substances such as methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulphide, which can pose health risks if inhaled in significant amounts. Traps prevent the emission of such gases in unwanted areas.

Pest Control:

In addition to sewer gases, traps also prevent pests such as rats, cockroaches, and insects from entering the building through the plumbing system. The water barrier acts as a deterrent and barrier against these unwanted creatures.

Blockage Prevention:

Traps are designed to catch solid debris, hair, and other materials that may be inadvertently washed down the drain. This helps prevent these materials from causing blockages further down the plumbing system, reducing the risk of clogged pipes and backups.

So the trap plumbing definition and purpose must be clear to you now. Without these features, our drainage system would have got blocked quite easily or might not be functioning properly as well. Almost every household has traps installed in their plumbing system

This is what I know about what is a trap in plumbing.
