What is a sleeper wall?
It is a wall that is constructed to provide support to joints, beams that have been put in the ground. Here, the sleeper is stacked one on top of each other. The walls can be built vertically or near-vertically. It withstands the pressure that is exerted by soil ( retained material).
Plastic sleepers for retaining walls are used for landscaping. It reduces the chances of water getting absorbed in the ground. It prevents erosion from taking place. Plastic sleepers are popular in areas that have steep terrains or gardens.
Developers decide on the use of plastic sleeper depending on the level of groundwater in the soil and the volume of Earth. Without proper construction of sleeper retaining walls in place, the building will get bad cross ventilation.
Examples of famous sleeper walls are :
- Abbey Church at St Mary’s Abbey, York.
- Parish Church of St John Baptist, Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
- St Nicholas Shambles, Newgate Street, London
- Walbrook Mithraeum (also known as the Temple of Mithras), London.
