When I was a kid, I had a very stupid idea of what drawing room is. I was just 5-6 years old when I believed that a drawing room is a room where we can sit and draw. I know, what logic is that right? But don’t blame me, I was just a kid. But as I grew up I realised what is a drawing room and its purpose. Let me share a detailed aspect of the drawing room now. What is the meaning of drawing room In Indian households, a drawing room is a separate room to receive and entertain guests. When we were teenagers, we weren’t allowed to hang out in the drawing room and it was exclusive to the guests who would visit us. I didn’t understand much on that front back then but now I do. You cannot treat your drawing room like a living room. They both are separate rooms for different purposes.  What do you find in a drawing room? A drawing room has many excellent features which may not be there in the other rooms. Typically these are the things you will observe:
  • A rug on the floor
  • Table lamps
  • A big table and a coffee table
  • Wall decor and art pieces
  • Formal seating with comfortable sofa and chairs
Difference between living room and drawing room A living room is like a lounge where you can hang out, play games, watch TV and do daily stuff. However, a drawing room is strictly to entertain guests. I hope now we’re clear on what is a drawing room in a house. Let me tell you what is drawing room meaning in the context of home architecture. The drawing room, also known as the parlour or living room, serves as the primary gathering space for family and guests. I would say that in our Indian households, it is usually a formal yet inviting area designed to promote conversation, relaxation, and entertainment. I have noticed that the drawing room typically occupies a central location within the house, which is easily accessible from other living areas and the entrance. But I think it is the interior designers who work their magic in curating the correct furnishings and decor to create a welcoming and stylish ambiance.

What is Drawing Room in House?

I believe a drawing room is a combination of the essential elements which include;
  • Comfortable Seating like plush sofas, armchairs, and ottomans provide ample seating for guests to relax and converse.
  • A coffee table or a central coffee table that serves as a focal point and provides a convenient surface for drinks, snacks, and decorative accents.
  • A television, sound system, or fireplace can add to the entertainment value of the drawing room.
  • Ambient lighting like soft and diffused lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  • Most importantly, the decor like elegant rugs, artwork, decorative objects, and fresh flowers add visual interest and reflects the homeowner's personal style.
