Hi there,

Do you want to know if you can claim a tax deduction as a pensioner? If this is your query I must tell you that yes, you can claim tax if you are paying rent as a pensioner. But there are certain conditions you need to follow.

  • The rent payment must be more than 10% of your income.

  • Neither you nor your family including your wife, and minor children can own a house in the same city.

  •  You should not be receiving HRA from your employer.

If you fulfil these conditions, you can claim HRA under Section 80 GGupto 25% of your income but not exceeding Rs 2,000 per month.

I hope I have answered your query. If not you can post your question again on Forum and explain the question in detail.
