What is termite resistant plywood?

A plywood that gets chemically treated to last long and resist termite, moisture and even fire is called a termite resistant plywood. You must have heard of Sainik plywood. They are termite and borer proof and come with a minimum guarantee of 5 years. It is best to use Sainik plywood but if you want to make your old and existing plywoods termite free, there are ways to make them termite resistant as well.

It is hard to know is plywood termite resistant or not but you make them at least. All you need to do is

  • Apply anti-termite chemical on the plywoods or wood

  • Let it dry for 6-8 hours

  • Finish it with veneer or laminate

I would also suggest you ask a carpenter about which chemical to use to get the best result. You will get several anti-termite chemicals that are odorless, eco-friendly and even non-toxic

So just go for termite proof plywood if you really want your wood to last long.

If you’re looking for the answer to the question, of whether plywood termite proof exists or not, the answer is no. However, there are certain things that you can do to make your plywood resistant to the attack of such pests. Let me guide you through the methods.

Is Plywood Termite Proof?

Plywoods generally are not resistant to termites. They are vulnerable and can be eaten away, if not treated properly. Let me share some methods which will help you add a protective layer to your plywood and increase its life.

How to Protect Plywood from Termites?

Here are a few ways through which you can protect your plywood from termite attack.

  1. You can paint your plywood with epoxy or acrylic-latex paints.

  2. You can get a special chemical treatment for your plywood. Boiling Water Resistant grade plywood (BWR) is one such material, which helps in preventing termite attack.

  3. This is more of a preventive measure. You must keep your plywood dry at all times. Wet plywood is the feeding ground for termites, as they prefer moisture to grow. Eliminating moisture will reduce the chances of termite attack to a large extent.

  4. Following up on the 3rd point, you must avoid placing your plywood in the garden or any surface where it can come in direct contact with moisture.

I would like to wrap up my answer on this note. I hope my explanation helps you learn how to have a termite free plywood.
