In my home, the plywood lamination was damaged, so I planned to remove all the laminates and renovate it. I hired a renovation team to renovate my house along with removing and fixing lamination. I observed the process he performed. Hence, I can tell you better how to remove laminate from wood. Before looking at the process, all you need to do is arrange tools like a heat gun, scraper, and sandpaper. I have shared the detailed steps below.

How to Remove Plastic Laminate from Wood?

Here is the lamination removing process I noticed the professional followed.

  1. First, they make sure the workspace is well-ventilated by opening a window.

  2. They put plastic to protect nearby surfaces from heat or debris.

  3. Grab the heat gun and begin warming up the laminate. They kept the gun a few inches away and moved it around, so no area gets too hot.

  4. They then used a putty knife to carefully lift a corner.

  5. After that, they heat and pry a bit more until the laminate comes off.

  6. They sprayed on some adhesive remover, waited a few minutes, and then scraped it away with the putty knife.

  7. Once the glue’s gone, they wiped down the surface.

  8. To get everything smooth, they did a light sanding of the plywood.

  9. Finally, they finished up by cleaning dust from the area.

I hope this will help you.

You must know that laminate is a thin covering that protects a large wooden core from water damage, humidity, and sunlight. To ensure a long life for your laminated surface, you have to remove and replace the laminate from time to time. Read below if you don’t know how to remove laminate from plywood:

Things Required:
  • 5-in-1 putty knife

  • Clean, dry rags

  • Denatured alcohol

  • Heat gun

Process Involved in Removing Laminate from Plywood:
  • First, insert the 5-in-1 putty knife’s point into the crevice between the plywood backing and the laminate gently. Pry the 2 surfaces apart, freeing 1/8-1/4 inches from the adhesive at a time.

  • Next, it’s time to use the heat gun! Turn it on and let it come to its full temperature. Hold the gun 12-15 inches from the gap while prying both the surfaces gently using your putty knife.

  • Slowly move the gun along the gap’s length and back again, using 15-18 inches swings of the gun nozzle.

  • Insert the putty knife’s point further into the gap. Pry both the surfaces apart further as the heat softens the adhesive.

  • Keep the removed laminate facedown on a flat, clean surface.

  • Use the same side-to-side motion of your heat gun to heat the adhesive residue on the laminate’s back. Soften a part of the adhesive that’s no larger than 12 inches square.

  • Scrape away the adhesive immediately using your 5-in-1 putty knife’s flat front blade.

  • Now, soak a rag in denatured alcohol and use it to clean the knife.

  • Continue this process until all the adhesive is removed from the laminate’s back completely.

  • Heat and scrape away the adhesive residue from the wood backing’s surface.

  • Don’t forget to wipe your tools with alcohol after every scrape.
