I live in a house with a concrete roof, and seriously telling, during summers, it felt like the entire house turned into an oven. It was difficult to unwind or even get a good night's sleep because of the intense heat. I wasn’t aware of how to reduce heat in concrete roof. So, I looked for simple and affordable ways to reduce heat on concrete roofs. Some of them include applying a white roof coating or adding a green roof and so on.

How to Reduce Heat on Concrete Roof?

Here is what I found.

  1. Apply White Roof Coatings: You can use a heat-reflective painting that acts like sunscreen for the roof. It reflects sunlight and stops the roof from heating too much. After applying this, you can notice the house feels much cooler even during the hottest part of the day.

  2. Add a Green Roof: If you can, plant some grass or small plants on the roof. This is a natural way to reduce heat. I tried putting a few pots with plants, and not only did it make the area cooler, but it also looked beautiful.

  3. Install Shade Structures: You can put up a simple shade net over part of the roof. It blocks direct sunlight and makes the surface much cooler. Pergolas or awnings would work great too if you want something more permanent.

  4. Use Heat-Resistant Flooring: You can also cover a section of your roof with wooden deck tiles. These tiles didn’t absorb as much heat as concrete.

I hope you understand how to prevent heat from concrete roof.

How to Keep Roof Cool in Summer: 5 Tips

I own a terrace apartment and it used to get very hot during summer in Chennai. I had to find a ways on how to reduce heat from concrete roof. I asked around and did my own research and found many options which I have mentioned below.

How To Reduce Heat On Concrete Roof

  • You can apply a reflective or cool roof coating. These coatings, often white or light-colored, reflect sunlight and reduce heat absorption. They can significantly lower rooftop temperatures and are easy to apply.

  • You can add insulation to the roof or the ceiling beneath it. Insulating materials such as foam boards or fiberglass batts can help keep heat from penetrating the indoor space.

  • You can install a green roof or roof garden. Vegetation absorbs sunlight and provides natural insulation.

  • You can improve ventilation by installing roof vents or an attic fan. Proper ventilation allows hot air to escape and helps maintain a cooler temperature inside the building.

  • Consider using cool roofing materials designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat. You can also install shading devices such as shade sails to block direct sunlight from hitting the roof. This reduces heat gain and protects the roof material from UV damage.

Finally, I applied reflective paint that helped a lot in reducing the heat. I hope now you know how to reduce heat in concrete roof.

How to stop water leakage from concrete roof?

Hello Karan. I saw you asking how to reduce heat from concrete roof India and can share a couple of ways through which you can achieve this. I live in MP and the heat here is unbearable at this time of the year. So, to keep our concrete roof cool, we’ve implemented a couple of methods. Let me take you through those.

How to Cool Concrete Roof?

  1. You can apply a white coating. Instead of paint, this is a better option as the coating is more durable in comparison. Using a high-quality coating will help in returning close to 90% of the heat to the atmosphere.

  2. Another way is to install solar panels on your roof. This is a brilliant investment in my opinion as you will be able to cover the roof, reduce the temperature and get hot water/electricity based on the panels you wish to install.

We’ve implemented both solar panels for electricity and hot water. The result is quite good as the roof temperature stays on the lower side compared to before.

This is all I have to share with you. I hope you now know how to reduce heat in cement sheet houses.

How to Keep Roof Cool in Summer: 5 Tips

I had a home office which had a concrete roof. During the summers I realised how hot it used to get inside the home office. I wanted to know

how to prevent heat from concrete roof.

So, I talked to a friend of mine who got a reflective coating for his concrete roofed mini guest house. He told me what other thing I could try to reduce this heat.

How to Reduce Concrete Roof Temperature?

To combat this issue, my friend suggested I implement any of these effective strategies:

  • Reflective Coating:

My friend has applied a reflective coating to the roof surface of his mini guest house. He told me that these coatings typically consist of light-coloured paint or specialized elastomeric materials that reflect sunlight, reducing the amount of heat absorbed.

  • Insulation:

He suggested I could also install insulation above the ceiling. Insulation acts as a barrier, preventing heat from transferring from the roof to the living areas below.

  • Green Roof:

Another way he suggested was to install a green roof, which is essentially a rooftop garden. Plants and vegetation on a green roof absorb heat and release moisture through evapotranspiration, creating a cooler microclimate around the house.

  • Shade Structures:

Another way of reducing heat is installing shade structures, such as awnings, overhangs, or trellises, on the roof or around the house. These structures provide shade, preventing direct sunlight from hitting the roof and reducing heat absorption.

  • Ventilation:

I also installed vents and fans to allow hot air to escape from my home office, preventing it from accumulating and heating up the house.

So, these are a few ways on

how to reduce heat in concrete roof.

Living in a subtropical country, the temperature in India can soar up to forty degrees Celsius. You must have noticed, if you live on the top floor, your house might be getting warm first due to the heating of the concrete roof. I will share with you tips and tricks on how to reduce heat from concrete roof.

How to reduce heat from concrete roof ?

Use one of the following methods to reduce heat from the concrete roof.

Gravel :

To reduce heat from getting trapped in the concrete of the roof. You can lay down a layer of 40 mm gravel or railway jelly. It will shade the roof during the daytime, creating a cooler temperature for the residents.

Modified Bitumen :

To make your concrete roof into a cool roof, install a modified bitumen roof. Modified bitumen roofing is a membrane made up of sheets of plasticized or rubberized asphalt held together with rolled reinforcing fabric. The heat from the rays of the sun will get absorbed.

Shingles :

If your budget allows, get cool asphalt shingles installed on the roof. These shingles contain specially coated reflective granules to help them better reflect sunlight. It will keep your roof and your house cooler than before.

You can look up other options or stick to the classic gravel and tar method. This is all from my end on how to reduce heat from concrete roof.
