Recently, I noticed the laminated dresser in my home started looking dull. So, I planned to get it painted. I also researched online how to paint over a laminate dresser and found some simple steps. These included cleaning the surface to remove dust and dirt, and lightly sanding the furniture to help the paint stick better. I have shared the detailed steps below for your reference.

What are the Steps to Paint Over a Laminate Dresser?

  1. First, clean the surface properly using a mild cleaner and a soft cloth to remove dust, dirt, and any oily spots.

  2. Next, lightly sand the entire surface using fine-grit sandpaper. Since laminate is smooth and glossy, sanding helps make it rough enough for the paint to stick better.

  3. After sanding, apply a good-quality primer made for laminate surfaces. This helps the paint stick well and prevents peeling later. Let the primer dry fully.

  4. Choose a paint suitable for laminate. Acrylic paint is a good option because it’s durable and comes in multiple colors. Apply the paint in thin coats using a brush or roller.

  5. Let each coat dry before adding the next. Usually, two to three coats are needed for a smooth and even finish.

  6. Once the paint is dry, apply a clear topcoat to seal and protect the surface.

  7. Let everything dry completely before using the dresser. The final result will be smooth and look new.

I am planning to hire a professional painter to do the job. I hope this helps you understand how to paint laminate furniture to give it a smooth and fresh look.

My sister and I painted our bedroom dresser with a painting brush last year and it was a fun experience. The paint chipped and scuffed off within a few days and we learnt our lesson. This is what happens when you don’t know how to paint a laminate dresser the right way. Then, we did some research and found that there is a particular way to paint onto a laminate surface and here, I will tell you how.

How to Paint over Laminate Furniture?

In most of the tutorials, we found you need to sand the surface before applying paint. However, we were no experts, so we dug up more to find tutorials on how to paint a laminate dresser without sanding. Here are a few steps that we found and you can followed them too:

You must start using a damp cloth or a lint free cloth to wipe down the surface to remove dust or dirt.

Use a shellac-based primer and apply two coats of it using a roller. You can also use a paintbrush, but roller is a quicker and more convenient method. Whatever you use, ensure that you apply thin coats or the primer will drag.

  • Choose your own emulsion paint and apply two coats. It is generally advisable to use eggshell for furniture which we didn't know about earlier. Let the eggshell to cure and harden for some days.

These steps helped us smoothly paint our laminate dresser. Be very vigilant while you’re painting the surface to avoid spillage. If you don’t want to create a mess like us, consider hiring a professional.

I hope this answer gives you some idea on how to paint a laminate dresser.

How to Paint Melamine Cabinets?

Recently, I bought a laminate dresser from the flea market. I wanted to get it painted as I didn't like its colour, but I was in a dilemma about whether it could be painted or not. I called my uncle and asked if I could paint it. He told me yes and informed me about how to paint a laminate dresser.

How to Paint a Laminate Dresser Without Sanding?

Here are the steps he asked me to follow for repainting my laminate dresser.

Step 1: Cleaning

He said when it comes to how to repaint a laminate dresser, the first step is to clean it. He told me to thoroughly clean the dirt or debris from over the dresser using a wet rag.

Step 2: Using Liquid Sandpaper Product

He told me that if I didn’t want to sand the surface, then I could use liquid sandpaper. This can interact with the surface of the furniture to dull it and make it ready to paint.

Step 3: Apply Primer And Paint

The final step he told me about was applying primer to the dresser and waiting for sometime to let it dry. After that, he told me to apply one coat of my desired paint and again wait for some time. When the first coat had dried out, he told me to apply another coat to finish the painting process.

This is the process my uncle told me when I asked him about how to paint a laminate dresser. Hope this helps.
