3. Next, figure out the entire region. Using the following example: 300 square feet is the main area (20 × 15). The alcove is 12 square feet. So the total is 312 square feet.

4. For fitting and cutting, always factor in an additional 5 to 10%. So, 312 × 1.05 = 327.6 sq. ft., rounded to 328 sq. ft.

5. When purchasing an area rug, measure only the space it will occupy, leaving roughly 18 inches between the rug and the wall.
