How to fix cracks in chimney ?

Small cracks in the chimney are early warning signs that your chimney is on the road to ruin. Learning how to fix cracks in chimney will save you thousands of rupees. It will save your family from a chimney fire and stop the penetration of rain or snow. Keep reading to know more. 

Here are pieces of equipment needed for repair crack in chimney :

Joint raker

• Tuckpointing tool

• Ladder

• Masonry chisel

• Hammer

• Pointing trowel

• Wire brush

• Putty knife

• Garden hose

• Caulk gun

• Paintbrush

• Safety glasses

• Fall-arresting harness (optional)

Materials

• High-heat mortar

• Latex gloves

• Mortar

• Clean rags

• Masonry sealer

• With a joint raker, hammer and masonry chisel scarpe out of the loose mortar. 

• With a garden hose, hose down the brick and let it dry. 

• Take a pointing trowel and press the mortar into the open joints.

• Smooth the joints with a tuck-pointing tool.

• To fill large cracks, between 1/8 and 1 inch in diameter.

• Inject a premixed cement patch into the crack. You can use either a squeeze bottle or a putty knife for it. 

• In the end, smooth the joint with a tuck-pointing tool.

• You can use masonry sealer in hairline cracks. You will then scrape away any loose particles with a putty knife. 

• When the paste is dry, apply an undiluted sealer with a brush. 

If the chimney mortar is severely damaged, I would advise you to get the bricks removed and replaced. This is all from my end on how to fix cracks in chimney.
