Fixing a latch is pretty easy if you have DIY skills, but if you are unsure, you better leave the job to the experts. When I faced a door latch issue, I hired a Carpenter and asked him how to fix a door latch. He told me that there are various ways to fix this issue, but before that, understanding whether the latch is missing below or above the plate is important.
How To Fix The Door Latch?
He told me that, when it comes to how to fix latch on door, the lipstick test is very helpful. For the lipstick test, I needed to rub lipstick on the edge of the deadbolt. Following that, I should try closing the door so that the latch barely touches the strike plate. This way, it will be easier to understand if the latch is touching above or lower.
Tightening the top hinge could solve the issue if the lipstick mark is below. If the lipstick mark is above, tightening the lower hinge can solve it.
If tightening the screws doesn’t solve the issue, the hinges need to be removed, and the area needs to b sanded. He said adding small pieces of cardboard can also be added.
He added that the strike plate hole could sometimes not be in alignment. If that’s the case, then use a metal file to enlarge the strike plate.
If the door still won't latch properly, then the last solution would be to move the strike plate up and down.
