Step by Step Process to Finish Wood Furniture with Lacquer
Start by sanding the entire piece with 180 to 220 grit sandpaper, always going in the direction of the wood grain.
Wipe it clean with a tack cloth afterwards because lacquer literally magnifies every bit of dust and scratch underneath. Ensure you follow this step otherwise lacquer won’t work.
For the first coat dilute your lacquer 50/50 with lacquer thinner. This helps it penetrate and bond better with the wood.
After that apply thin coats only, never thick ones. Each coat dries in about 20 to 30 minutes which is one of lacquer's biggest advantages over polyurethane.
Between coats, lightly sand with 320 grit sandpaper and wipe down again before the next layer.
After the final coat dries for 48 hours, buff lightly with steel wool and finish with a coat of good paste wax for a smooth sheen.

Apply a wood grain filler. I generally prefer an Oil-based grain filler as it's resistant to water and rot.
Sand the surface with a sander
Mix and dilute the lacquer till you get a good consistency
With a brush or spray gun use apply a coat of lacquer
Brush the product along the grain, in an even - light handed coat
Make sure there is no bubbling, dripping, or splashing.
After 20 minutes when the surface feels non-tacky and dry to the touch, apply another layer.
