1 – As a Prospecting Tool: Screening during the conception phase of projects is one of the methods we recommend for getting your feet in the doorway with architects. Architects always overestimate costs and are forced to redo a lot of work, usually for no charge. 

2 – As a last-minute Bidding Tool: Sometimes you'll have a last-minute opportunity to submit a bid for a task as a general contractor (GC) or architect, but you won't have enough time to provide a detailed estimate. We can charge a little bit higher because we know they would ask for a reduction or to drop our pricing, so we don't need to be as precise with our first estimate.

3. The Rule of Two Method:

The Rule of Two Method is the name of the last tactic I'll discuss with you. The majority of contractors I know charge labour by "3 guys x 5 days." then put the project together in that manner. That is something you learn from experience in the field. If we can estimate our labour costs roughly, we can double that number by two and add 10% as a safety net since labour accounts for roughly 50% of the costs.
