How to Drill a Hole in a Wall?

A concrete wall can be hard to drill. You may need to drill a wall for many reasons such as installing furniture, home appliances etc, even you might need to drill a wall to fix it. Therefore it is important to learn how to drill a hole in a wall.

Step 1:

To drill hole in walls, mark the positions where you want to drill a hole with a pencil on the wall.

Step 2:

Now to understand how to drill into concrete walls, wear your goggles and insert the tungsten carbide masonry drill for the desired size of hole you want to with the hammer drill. Now properly grip the handgun with your hand. The drill should be perpendicular to the concrete for avoiding mistakes.  The drill's hammer may recoil while working.

Step 3:

Create a guide hole that is 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.

Step 4:

Now if you feel confident turn up the speed but make sure to have a good grip on your hammer drill. Concrete walls do not have air pockets so you can lose control of the tool. So, be very careful while drilling a hole.

Step 5:

If you feel that you have reached a spot where you cannot drill into concrete, don't force it as it can affect your drilling machine and the wall. Use a simple nail and hammer during these kinds of times and give a few tap to break the obstruction.

Step 6:

Drill and also brush away dust periodically. Take 15 sec to 20-sec pause to drill the hole.

Step 7:

Now remove the concrete dust with a vacuum and also wear goggles while removing the dust.

Step 8:

I bought a new mirror and was trying to get it installed but could not as there was no proper tools and I was not aware of how to drill a hole in wall. I called a friend and asked him about how to do it. He told me about the tools and the process of drilling into the wall. Here is what he told me.

He said I would need two things and those are a drill machine and drill bits. He also told me that I should choose drill bits according to the material that I was going to drill on. Here are the types that he mentioned. 

  • Drywall bit for sheetrock or plasterboard. 

  • Masonry bit for brick, stone, or concrete

  • Spur point bit for wood walls

  • Tile bit for tile, ceramic, or glass

I bought a Masonry bit as my wall was made of brick and concrete. Here is how to drill a hole on the wall.
