Summary
To wear clean up raw sewage under the house, you must first wear safety gear, ventilate the area, and turn off the power if water is present. Then, repair the sewage source and remove any standing waste using appropriate equipment. To avoid mould and odours, discard contaminated porous materials, wipe and disinfect hard surfaces with a bleach solution, and finally let the area dry within 2 days.

Here is how to clean up raw sewage under the house or your basement easily:

  • Keep safety first.

Wear protective gear, such as a respirator or N95 mask, waterproof shoes, goggles, and heavy-duty rubber gloves, before you enter under the house. The dangerous bacteria, viruses, and gases found in raw sewage can result in severe sickness if you inhale or touch them.

  • Have proper ventilation.

To improve proper air circulation, open all your windows and vents, and install fans (if possible). Good ventilation reduces toxic odours, airborne infections, and moisture accumulation, all of which can lead to mould growth.

  • Get rid of any electrical risks.

Turn off the electricity to the affected area at the main breaker if there is standing water or moisture close to the wiring. Electrical equipment should never be used in damp situations unless the power is completely cut off.

  • Inspect and repair the sewage source.

Before cleaning, find and address the underlying cause, which could be a septic backup, a damaged pipe, or a clogged sewer line. Let me tell you from my experience, repetitive contamination will result from cleaning without you address its source.

  • Now, remove leftover sewage.

To remove liquid waste, use a wet or dry vacuum or submersible pump (only when the power is off). Sewage should be disposed of in accordance with local laws.

  • Get rid of contaminated materials.

Throw away any porous materials that come into contact with sewage. It includes cardboard, rugs, soft furnishings, insulation, and damaged plasterboard. To stop additional contamination, seal them in sturdy trash bags.

  • Clean the surfaces.

You can now use water and detergent to clean hard, non-porous surfaces, like pipes and concrete. Next, use a bleach solution (about one cup of bleach per gallon of water) to disinfect. Bleach should never be combined with ammonia or other cleansers.

  • Let the entire area dry.

Within 24 to 48 hours, completely dry the area using fans and dehumidifiers. Mould and structural damage might result from residual moisture.

  • Finally, repair and dedorise the area.

Repair any structural damage, replace vapour barriers (particularly in crawl areas), and apply odour neutralisers.

I suggest contacting a reputable sewage cleanup team if there is significant contamination or a severe health risk. Hope this helps you.
