In the last three months, my air conditioner has been running continuously because of the unbearable heat. Last week, I noticed the outdoor unit was full of dust and looked very dirty. So, I hired an AC technician to clean it. He switched off the power to the outdoor AC unit and started the cleaning process. I have shared how to clean AC outdoor unit based on what I observed.

How to Clean Air Conditioner Outside Unit?

  1. Switch off the power to the outdoor AC unit. The technician checked the breaker and unplugged the unit for safety.

  2. Then, use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean the condenser fins. Ensure to remove dust and leaves carefully by moving the vacuum in straight lines.

  3. After that, straighten bent metal fins using a long knife to help the unit work better.

  4. Next, the technician I hired unscrewed the top cover and removed the fan carefully. He cleaned the fins inside properly.

  5. He rinsed the fins with a garden hose, ensuring not to use too much water pressure, and let everything dry completely.

  6. Finally, he put back the fan and cover securely and switched the power on again.

This is how he cleaned the outdoor unit. I also suggest getting your AC outdoor unit cleaning by a professional technician instead of doing it yourself to avoid any damage.

I have recently learned how to clean outdoor air conditioning unit. The process is quite simple and effective. I’d like to share the steps that I followed in this regard.

How to Clean Split AC Outdoor Unit with Water?

  • To be safe, I first switched off the air conditioning system

  • I carefully removed any visible debris, such as leaves and dirt, with a soft brush or cloth.

  • After this, I used a garden hose, to spray water and remove accumulated dirt. Followed by carefully cleaning the aluminium fins with a soft brush or fin comb for any still dirt.

  •  In order to protect the fins and other parts, it is imperative to avoid using too much water pressure.

  • I cleaned the outside unit and let it air dry completely before reactivating the air conditioner.

You too can follow these steps to assist yourself with how to clean your outdoor air conditioning unit.

To maintain the cleaning, I do this every season. It would be an added benefit to wash the dust filter inside the split AC unit more often.

The air conditioner's outside unit, referred to as the condenser unit, is essential for the cooling process. It can collect dirt, dust, leaves, and other pollutants over time, which could compromise its functionality and result in breakdowns. I've described my step-by-step process on how to clean AC outdoor unit at home to maintain a comfortable temperature in my home.

How to clean split AC outdoor unit?

  • First and foremost, turn off the power:

Prioritising safety, I turn off the split AC unit's power supply before starting any maintenance work. This preventive measure guards against any electrical accidents when cleaning.

  • Clear the area:

My first step is to look around the vicinity of the outdoor unit and clear it of any trash, leaves, or other vegetation that might hinder the airflow. It is essential to clean the area around the condenser so that it can operate effectively.

  • Gently lower the hose:

I hose out the outdoor unit with a mild stream of water from a garden hose to get rid of any loose dirt or debris.

  • Clean the Fins:

The airflow can be impacted by the fragile and easily bent fins of the condenser. I use a soft brush or a fin comb to clean them, being careful not to harm the fins while I remove dirt and debris gently.

  • Use a Gentle Cleaning Agent:

I prepare a moderate cleaning solution with water and a light detergent to tackle tough dirt and grime. I use a soft cloth or sponge to apply the solution to the surface of the appliance, making sure that no more liquid gets inside the electrical components.

  • Clean thoroughly:

I fully rinse the split AC outside unit with water after using the cleaning solution to get rid of any leftover dirt and the cleaning agent's residue.

  • Check for blockages:

I check the drain channels in the unit and clear any obstructions while cleaning. By keeping these pathways free, water buildup and potential damage can be avoided.

  • Allow Enough Time for Drying:

I let the outdoor unit air dry entirely after cleaning it before re-engaging the power. Drying properly prevents moisture buildup and lowers the chance of rust or corrosion.

Regularly cleaning the split AC outdoor unit is essential for maintaining its efficiency and extending its lifespan. By following this step-by-step guide on how to clean outdoor AC unit, I have successfully kept my outdoor unit in excellent condition. However, if you are not willing to clean the unit by yourself, you can assist yourself with a professional.
